The US EPA says a septic tank should be pumped every 3–5 years, and that how often depends on tank size, household size, water habits and the amount of solids that accumulate — you pump when solids reach about two-thirds of the tank. Toilet paper is one of those solids. Sending less of it in means less accumulating. How much longer between pump-outs? We're not going to invent a number — it depends on your tank, your household and your habits. But if a pump-out costs you several hundred dollars, the direction of travel is obviously in your favour, and fewer paper-related clogs is a bonus that shows up as plumber call-outs you don't make.
🕊️ When this stops being about money
There's a point in many families where using the toilet stops being private. After a stroke, with Parkinson's, MS, advanced arthritis or dementia, the reaching and twisting that wiping requires becomes difficult — and then impossible. Someone has to help. Usually a partner, or a son or daughter.
Almost nobody talks about that part. But for the person it happens to, it's often the moment they feel they've lost something they can't get back. A bidet is one of the few things that can quietly give it back — because water does the cleaning, so no reaching is needed.
What the research actually found
A 2024 scoping review in Innovation in Aging looked at fourteen studies on bidet use by older adults. Two findings stood out: older adults described greater privacy and independence, and caregivers reported spending less time on toileting, freeing them for other care. The same review is honest about the limits — many older adults felt apprehensive about the technology at first, and the authors note real gaps still to be researched. Van Son & Cerruti, 2024
Why it's the electric seat here — not the $40 one
This is the one situation where we'd point past our own budget pick. An electric seat adds warm water, a warm-air dryer and a remote — which together can remove the need to wipe at all. That's the difference between managing alone and needing someone. For everyone else, the $40 attachment saves the same paper; here, the extra buys independence.
Three honest cautions — please read these before buying for someone else. 1. Reduced sensation. After a stroke, with neuropathy or diabetes, someone may not feel water that's too hot. Set the temperature low and test it yourself first — burn risk is real. 2. Cognitive impairment. A multi-button remote can confuse rather than help. Choose simple controls, or preset it and cover the rest. 3. Nozzle hygiene. In a care situation, cleaning the nozzle regularly matters more, not less. Pick a model with a self-cleaning nozzle and still clean it on a schedule.
And one thing we won't pretend: this doesn't suit everyone. Some people can't transfer safely to a toilet at all, and some homes have no outlet near it. An occupational therapist or the treating doctor will know in five minutes whether it fits — that's a better first call than any website, including ours.
Look at the numbers above. On money, carbon and forest, the bidet comes out ahead across the whole range of assumptions. Water is the closest call: under the midpoint and high estimates the bidet saves water too, while at the most conservative water figure with light paper use it can roughly break even — the calculator shows you exactly where you land.
So why is most of the West still wiping? Not because anyone weighed it up and chose it. Because no one ever questioned it. It's the default we inherited — kept alive by habit, a little embarrassment, and an industry that quietly sells us a forest every year.
The strange thing was never the bidet. It's that we ever agreed to the alternative.
