The full life of a toilet roll: forest, mill, plastic, truck, sewer

We treat toilet paper as if it appears in the cupboard and disappears down the drain. It does neither. Here's the whole chain — and an honest comparison with the small climate habits many of us worry about instead.

Five stages you never see

1. The forest

Most soft toilet paper is made from virgin wood pulp, not recycled fibre, because recycled fibre is shorter and feels rougher. Softness is the whole product promise, so the industry keeps reaching for fresh trees. A forest that gets cut stops storing carbon and releases part of what it held — and if it's old, slow-growing boreal forest, "replanted" does not mean restored on any timescale that matters to us.

2. The mill

Wood has to be broken into fibre (pulping), usually bleached, then formed and dried. Drying is the energy-hungry part: you are essentially boiling water out of a wet sheet at industrial scale. Water is used throughout, and estimates of how much vary enormously depending on where you draw the boundary — from roughly 23 litres to 140 litres per roll. We show that range rather than the flattering end, because honestly nobody should quote a single confident number here.

3. The plastic

Here's the irony most people miss: a product marketed on nature and softness is almost always wrapped in plastic film, often twice — individual rolls inside a multipack, multipacks inside a transport wrap. It is single-use packaging around a single-use product, and it exists mainly so the pack survives shipping and looks clean on a shelf.

4. The truck

Toilet paper is mostly air. That's the point of it — but it means you are shipping enormous volume for very little weight. Trucks fill up on space long before they fill up on load, so the transport footprint per useful gram is poor compared with dense goods. Every roll is moved from mill to warehouse to shop to your car, and then stored in your home taking up shelf space.

5. After the flush

Flushing isn't disposal — it's a handover. Paper travels with your wastewater to a treatment plant, where solids are screened, settled and processed, and that whole system runs on electricity around the clock. What's separated out has to go somewhere: incinerated, landfilled, or processed further. On a septic system it's simpler and more personal — the paper becomes part of the solids that determine how often the tank must be pumped.

None of this is scandalous on its own. It's ordinary industrial reality. What's odd is that a product with a five-stage global supply chain gets treated as if it has no footprint at all — because it's embarrassing to discuss.

The comparison that reframes it

Here's where it gets genuinely interesting. Many of us carry a low-level guilt about small energy habits — the light left on, the charger in the socket, the standby light glowing in the dark. Those habits are real, and they're worth having. But how do they compare with something we never think about at all?

A 10 W LED bulb left on continuously for a whole year uses 10 W × 8,760 h ≈ 88 kWh. At roughly 0.4 kg CO₂ per kWh (a typical grid average), that's about 35 kg CO₂.

One person's toilet paper at ~100 rolls × ~1.5 kg CO₂e ≈ 150 kg CO₂e a year.

So a single person's toilet paper is roughly four times the carbon of leaving a light burning day and night, all year. Both numbers are estimates and your grid may be cleaner or dirtier — but you'd have to be wrong by a factor of four for the conclusion to flip.

To be clear about what this does and doesn't mean. It is not an argument for leaving lights on. It's an argument about attention: we've built strong cultural habits around the visible, cheap-to-change things, and almost none around a product we buy every week and never discuss. The guilt is misallocated, not excessive.

An $84 billion industry nobody argues about

The global toilet paper market is projected to reach about $84.6 billion by 2031. That is a substantial global industry built on a product that is used once, for seconds, and then destroyed — and whose main competitor, water, is already plumbed into the room.

We're not going to pretend that money is stolen or that the people in that industry are villains; they are meeting real demand, and hygiene genuinely matters. The more interesting question is one of allocation: this is tens of billions of dollars a year, plus the forests, mills, plastic and freight behind it, largely spent on a habit that a one-time $40 device substantially replaces. If that capital and those materials went somewhere else, what would we get for them? That's a fair question to ask out loud, and it's rarely asked.

Why is there no policy conversation?

This is the part that puzzled us most, so we looked. There is policy — but notice where it sits.

The EU's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) covers pulp and paper, requiring that products placed on the EU market aren't linked to deforestation. Elsewhere there are recycled-content rules, eco-labels, and long-running fights about what may be flushed. In other words: we regulate where the fibre comes from, and what may go down the drain — but essentially nothing addresses whether we need to use the fibre at all.

Why the silence on the demand side? We'd offer four unglamorous explanations before any dramatic one:

One asymmetry worth sitting with

Over your lifetime you have seen thousands of advertisements for toilet paper — soft towels, puppies, clouds, babies, cashmere. You have almost certainly never seen one for a bidet.

Nothing improper is required for that to happen. One side is a recurring purchase — bought weekly, forever, with a marketing budget to defend it. The other is a one-time device that quietly reduces spending, so there's far less reason to advertise it to you every week for forty years. Advertising doesn't just sell products; it decides which options feel normal, and which never occur to you at all.

But here's the correction we had to make to our own argument. We assumed the bidet industry must be tiny. It isn't: the global bidets market is around $30 billion, heading for roughly $41 billion by 2030. Against toilet paper's ~$85 billion that's about one to three — not the hundred-to-one you'd guess from your own bathroom. So this isn't a story about a giant crushing a minnow.

Which leaves a much more interesting question

If bidets are a $30 billion global industry, why does it feel like a fringe idea? Because the invisibility is regional, not global. Washing with water is entirely normal across Japan, Italy, Spain, Portugal, much of the Middle East, South and South-East Asia and Latin America. Measured by people rather than by marketing, a very large share of humanity already does this and has for generations.

Which flips the question round. The odd thing isn't that bidets are unproven or exotic. The odd thing is that a handful of wealthy, paper-dominant markets — largely English-speaking and northern European — are the outlier, and have quietly assumed their own habit is the default the rest of the world hasn't caught up with. It's the other way around.

That's a far more honest explanation than any conspiracy, and a more uncomfortable one: nobody hid this from you. It just never crossed a cultural border, and no one on your side of that border had a reason to mention it.

So is culture the whole story? Probably not. But we'd be careful about the leap to something more sinister, and we're not going to insinuate what we can't show. The mundane explanation covers the facts well: a taboo product, an entrenched industry with every reason to keep talking, a replacement with nobody to speak for it, and regulators with more urgent files. You don't need a villain to get this outcome — and in a way that's the more uncomfortable finding, because there's nobody to blame and therefore nobody to fix it except us.

What we're not saying

We'd rather set this out plainly, because this subject attracts strident voices from both directions:

What we are saying is narrower: this is a five-stage industrial supply chain, ending in a sewer, for a product used once — and it's strange that it sits entirely outside the conversation, while we quietly feel guilty about a light switch. That's a debate worth having, and we'd genuinely like to be argued with.
